SO many people come to me in midlife and still want to carry on doing the same intensity and type of workout they did decades ago. Let’s be honest, the workouts you did in your 20s and 30’s just don’t work anymore when you hit your 40’s and beyond. I’m talking from personal experience as a post menopausal woman in my late 50’s, you simply cannot:
- Do random classes and see results
- Eat whatever you like and rely on a fast metabolism
- Push through aches/pains and hope they disappear
- Skip sleep and continue the next day with long intense workouts
Midlife absolutely changes the rules, which is why your fitness training should reflect that. This is where personal training works so well as a positive and empowering way to embrace this life stage.
1. Your Body Isn’t Broken — It’s Just Different
Never ever say you are over the hill, too old, or past it. Your body has changed and so should your workouts. Hormones have shifted. Recovery is slower. Stress hits harder. Muscle mass and bone density decline if we don’t use it.
My PT sessions take all this into account and revolve around building you up, in both body and mind.
- Strength becomes more important than ever
- Recovery matters
- Joints need care
- Stress management, sleep and diet are all part of the bigger picture
2. You Don’t Have Time to Waste Anymore
Midlife can be a really busy time and often means balancing a job, teenage children, ageing parents and a full diary. Time is scarce and so your workouts need to be efficient and focussed. PT sessions are so specific they remove any guesswork and you leave knowing you’ve done exactly what your body needed, leaving you energised to do the stuff you enjoy.
3. Strength Training Becomes a Form of Insurance
This is so important and incredibly powerful – strength training in midlife is future-proofing your body (and mind) for the years ahead. Your PT session includes working on//
- Bone density
- Muscle mass
- Balance
- Metabolism
- Mobility & Independence
So you feel capable to do daily tasks, have a great quality of life and carry on playing sports at 55, 65 and beyond.
4. Confidence Feels Different Now
In your 20’s and 30’s, confidence might have been all about how you looked, but in midlife it tends to be more about how you feel. How your back is, how your knees are, little things like standing taller and trusting your body to do the things you love and want to do.
This is my favourite thing about my job, seeing clients confidence grow. Personal training builds confidence and self belief quietly and steadily, every single session.
Every time you lift something better or maybe heavier than you thought you could…
Every time your back doesn’t ache the way it used to…
Every time you surprise yourself…
5. You Finally Put Yourself First
So many women (and men) say the same thing to me when I first meet them. “I’ve spent years looking after everyone else.” Well now it’s your time, personal training becomes one hour that is just for you. Moving your body, focusing on your health, fitness and wellbeing.
No demands. No emails. No phone calls. No roles to play.
6. Accountability With Encouragement All the Way
PT sessions are about building you up, encouraging you, and offering realistic progressions. I totally understand lack of sleep and fluctuating energy, which is why I always ask how you are and how did you sleep? How is your energy today? If necessary we adapt and change the session completely, it’s why it works so well and is sustainable.
